Chicago, October 20, 2006 – Where2GetIt today announced it has integrated its application program interface (API) with the Oracle platform, making it the first application service provider (ASP) to run global enterprise level geospatial applications on the Oracle platform, and incorporated representational state transfer (REST) technology, adding several new features to its set of geospatial tools.
“With the explosive growth of location aware devices, the REST interface makes it easier than ever for independent software developers to include geospatial elements in any type of location-based application,” said Manish Patel, president and CEO of Where2GetIt. “The REST functionality is easy, because requests can be embedded in any application or device that has Internet connectivity. It also requires no custom software libraries to be loaded within the device.”
Potential applications of this new functionality include but are not limited to wireless navigation, interactive voice response (IVR), fleet management solutions, business analytics, site selection and global positioning system (GPS) tracking applications. Developers can sign up for access to the API at http://www.Where2GetIt.com/products/developers.
The REST API now provides customers with four advanced geospatial functions:
• Geocoding: converts user entered addresses into latitude and longitude coordinates, which are used to globally plot locations on maps or for other geospatial queries.
• Reverse geocoding: converts GPS coordinates into an address.
• Two-function proximity search: allows users to identify retail or other locations on a straight line or drive time basis, a key differentiator since most geospatial providers perform proximity search using only a straight line basis, failing to account for lakes, mountains, one way streets or other non-drivable terrain. Proximity search by drive time provides the true proximity of a location by accounting for these features.
• Driving directions: includes point-to-point and multipoint driving directions. Available anywhere in Canada, the U.S. and most of Europe, these tools can be utilized in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish.
As part of Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco 2006, Where2GetIt will exhibit in booth #3758, Moscone West. Where2GetIt’s Jon Scarbrough will present the REST API and SlippyMap API at the North American Oracle Spatial SIG meeting on October 22, 2006, 10:45 am. – 12:00 p.m. at the Hilton Union Square. Scarbrough’s session is part of the Database Technology track and will take place in room 23.
